General cargo goes in a Dry container, bulky cargo in a High Cube, temperature-sensitive cargo in a Reefer, tall or crane-loaded cargo in an Open Top, and cargo that does not fit inside a box on a Flat Rack. The choice depends on the cargo's size, weight and temperature needs.

Dry: the standard choice

A 20' Dry has internal dimensions of 5,898 x 2,352 x 2,385 mm, a volume of 33.2 m³ and a payload of 28,270 kg. A 40' Dry offers 12,032 x 2,352 x 2,385 mm, 67.6 m³ and 26,730 kg. Heavy cargo often suits the 20', while voluminous cargo suits the 40'.

High Cube: when volume matters

The 40' High Cube has an internal height of 2,690 mm and a volume of 76.4 m³, which is 8.8 m³ more than a standard 40' Dry. Its payload is 26,580 kg. It suits light but tall or bulky cargo.

Reefer: when temperature matters

Reefers work in a range of −25°C to +25°C. Insulation and the cooling unit reduce the internal space: a 40' Reefer offers 59.6 m³ and 25,680 kg, a 20' Reefer 27.5 m³ and 27,410 kg.

Open Top and Flat Rack: cargo that does not fit a closed box

An Open Top is loaded from above by crane and covered with a tarpaulin. The 40' version has an internal height of 2,330 mm, 66.4 m³ and a 26,280 kg payload. The 40' Flat Rack has no roof, collapsible side walls and a payload of 40,000 kg at a maximum gross weight of 45,000 kg. Both usually need a securing plan.

Before you choose

Measure the cargo as it will actually be loaded, including pallets and packing, and confirm its gross weight. Dimensions can differ slightly between container makers, so confirm the exact figures with your forwarder before booking.
